The Inland Sea at a glance

The Inland Sea is a stretch of sea that reaches into the dunes in the south-east of Qatar. Most visitors call the area Khor Al Adaid. A desert safari from Doha takes you there across soft sand, with stops for dune driving and views over the water.

You cannot reach it in an ordinary car. The last part needs a 4x4 and a driver who knows the terrain, which is why almost everyone goes with a tour. Trips are sold as half-day and full-day options, and a private tour with a set time slot is one example below.

How a desert safari from Doha works

The same steps apply to most tours, whatever the operator.

The road section

The first leg is on paved road as far as Sealine. One private tour lists roughly 45 to 60 minutes for this part. The rest of the way is desert track, which is why the total drive is longer than the distance suggests.

Dunes and the lagoon

The route crosses dunes and ends at the water of the Inland Sea. What happens on top of the drive depends on the option you book, so read the description of each trip and see what is included.

The vehicle and the driver

Operators use air-conditioned 4x4 vehicles with a licensed English-speaking driver or guide. An experienced local driver is a safety decision for route planning. No legal duty to hire a guide is published, but driving this terrain on your own is not a good idea.

Time of day

Private tours list a morning slot from 09:00 to 13:00 and an afternoon slot from 14:00 to 18:00. Check the departure time and the meeting point when you book.

What a desert safari costs in 2026

Starting prices as listed. Each row is one operator's product, not a market range. At the 2026 peg of 3.64 riyals to the dollar, QAR 100 is about $27.

TripLengthListed price
Private desert and Inland Sea tour4 hours, 09:00 to 13:00 or 14:00 to 18:00From QAR 227 ($62)
Half day desert safariโ€“From QAR 215 ($59)
Full day desert safariโ€“From QAR 370 ($102)

The private tour lists a maximum of 5 guests per vehicle. Its overview shows QAR 227 per person, while the detail page describes the price as per vehicle. Confirm which basis applies before you compare it with other trips. The half day and full day prices are starting prices on the operator's 2026 and 2027 schedule, so the final price can differ by date and option.

Who should not join

A drive over dunes is hard on the back and neck, and operators set health limits. One operator excludes pregnant women, children under 6 years and people with heart problems, or with back or neck complaints or injuries. Child seats are not allowed on that tour. Other operators set their own rules, so check the health notes of the tour you book.

Visit Qatar recommends covering shoulders and knees in public areas. Bring sun protection and plenty of water. Visit Qatar names October to May as the usual window for outdoor activities. From June to September, heat and coastal humidity make a long trip in the dunes hard work. Our weather guide has the monthly figures.

Khor Al Adaid: protection and wildlife

Khor Al Adaid is on Qatar's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage. It is not an inscribed World Heritage site. The list entry dates from 2008, so treat it as a proposal and not as a status that brings special rules for visitors.

The German Foreign Office advises against contact with animals in general. No fixed minimum distances for oryx, camels or sea life are published. Keep your distance, follow your driver and do not feed or chase animals. Anything a tour offers, such as a camel ride, is the operator's activity and not an official permit for swimming or driving off the track. If you want to swim, ask your operator whether it is allowed and safe at that spot.

Desert safari in Doha: frequently asked questions

How far is the Inland Sea from Doha?

Visit Qatar gives about 80 km and roughly 1 hour 30 minutes by 4x4. Treat the time as a guide, because sand conditions and the road section change it.

Can I drive to the Inland Sea myself?

Only a 4x4 can cross the desert, and the terrain is hard to read. No legal duty to hire a guide is published, but an experienced local driver is the safer way to plan the route.

How long does a desert safari take?

A private tour example runs 4 hours, either 09:00 to 13:00 or 14:00 to 18:00. Half day and full day trips from other operators are longer or shorter by option, so check the length on each listing.

Can children join a desert safari?

It depends on the operator. One tour excludes children under 6 years and does not allow child seats. Read the age and health notes before you book.

Is the Inland Sea a UNESCO World Heritage site?

No. Khor Al Adaid is on Qatar's tentative list, which is a proposal. It has not been inscribed.
