A Doha Layover or Stopover

A Doha layover can mean six hours between flights or up to four hotel nights. This guide shows what fits into each window, what the stopover package costs in 2026 and how to get from the airport to town.

Layover or stopover: what is the difference?

A layover is a connection of a few hours. A stopover is a longer break that you plan on purpose. Qatar Airways runs a stopover programme for connections of 12 to 96 hours, with up to 4 hotel nights. It needs a confirmed Qatar Airways or codeshare ticket and depends on availability, so not every booking qualifies. The standard package starts at $14 per person for 1 night, based on sharing a double room. That is $14 per person, not per room, and it is not a free night.

For shorter connections, a tour operator runs a guided transit city tour from a desk in the airport. The details are below. This is an independent guide, not run by Qatar Airways, the airport or any tour operator, and an outing is always your own decision.

Visas, bags and rules for a longer break

Citizens of Germany, Austria and Switzerland are on the Ministry of Interior list for a free tourist visa on arrival: 90 days in total, valid for 180 days, with a confirmed onward or return ticket and a passport valid for at least 6 months. Other nationalities should check their own entry rules first.

For travellers who need a transit visa, Visit Qatar names Qatar Airways passengers with at least 6 hours of transit who want a transit tour as the group that can apply at the Discover Qatar desk. The tour operator lists QAR 100 for it. That is not a blanket free transit visa for everyone.

Baggage matters. Under the programme terms, checked baggage on a transit of less than 24 hours cannot be collected, so pack what you need into your hand luggage. One airport-services guide, updated in July 2026, says there is currently no luggage storage at the airport. Ask at an information desk and plan with hand luggage.

Allow for changes. The German Foreign Office points to a continuing risk of airspace closures and currently advises against travel to Qatar (status 20 October 2026). Avoid non-refundable plans built around a tight connection.

From the airport into town

The Red Line of the Doha Metro serves the station Hamad International Airport T1. The standard fare is capped at QAR 6 per day. On Fridays the metro starts at 9 a.m. and the tram at 2 p.m. (Qatar Rail pocket map, printed January 2025), so check the current timetable before an early Friday start.

The official Karwa taxi pavilion is at the left end of the arrivals hall. Follow the signs for Taxi. You can also book through the Karwa app or on 800 8294. Third-party sources give an airport base charge of QAR 25 plus distance and time, which is an orientation, not a tariff table.

Drive times depend on traffic and destination. A hotel in Msheireb quotes about 25 minutes from the airport. A hotel on The Pearl quotes 29 km and 30 minutes. Do not apply either figure to every hotel. More options are on the airport page and in the guide to getting around.

A dhow cruise

One listed cruise costs QAR 150 and takes 2 hours, from 4 to 6 p.m. between October and February. It starts and ends at The Pearl, not at the Corniche, and you must be able to board and leave the boat without help.

A desert half day

The Inland Sea is about 80 km away and about 1 hour 30 minutes by 4x4. A private tour is listed from QAR 227, shown per person in one place and per vehicle in another, so confirm what the price covers.

Where to stay on a stopover

Pick a district by what you plan to do.

West Bay suits business trips and the coast. Msheireb puts you in the city, with a hotel quoting a 10 to 15 minute walk to the souq, the Corniche and the Msheireb Museums. The Pearl is a resort setting. Lusail is a marina location. The where to stay page compares the areas, and the weather page helps with the season.

Doha stopover: frequently asked questions

How long a layover do I need to leave the airport?

For the guided transit tour, at least 6 hours between scheduled arrival and departure. For an outing you organise yourself, no safe minimum applies to every case. Allow for immigration, traffic and the way back, and keep a large buffer.

Is the stopover hotel free?

No. The standard package starts at $14 per person for 1 night, with two people sharing a double room. It is not $14 per room. It needs a confirmed Qatar Airways or codeshare ticket, a connection of 12 to 96 hours and availability.

Can I collect my checked bags on a short layover?

Under the programme terms, checked baggage cannot be collected on a transit of less than 24 hours. Put what you need into your hand luggage.

Do I need a visa for a layover?

Citizens of Germany, Austria and Switzerland are on the list for a free visa on arrival. Travellers who need a visa and have at least 6 hours of transit can apply for the transit tour route at the Discover Qatar desk, which lists QAR 100. Check the rules for your own passport.

Is a Souq Waqif evening realistic on a long layover?

On a connection of 12 hours or more it can be. Activity picks up after 4 p.m., and on Friday some shops open only in the afternoon. Keep the metro hours in mind: the metro runs from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. from Saturday to Thursday, per the pocket map. See the Souq Waqif page.
